Salon haircare has a reputation for being expensive.
Some of that reputation is earned, and some of it is the bottle.
The gap between a supermarket shampoo and a salon one is real, and it usually comes down to concentration, gentler cleansing systems and formulas built around one hair type at a time. But the assumption that follows is where people get caught out: that a proper salon routine means six products from the same premium brand, bought all at once, replaced all at once.
It doesn't.
A routine that works is usually a few products, chosen for problems you genuinely have, at whatever price point you can sustain. The brand on each bottle matters far less than if the product suits your hair and if you're still using it in three months.
Here's how to build one without the panic-buy.
Start With the Problem You Already Have
The most expensive routine is the one built around someone else's hair.
Before you look at a single bottle, name the thing you want to fix. Most people land on one or two of these:
- dryness that conditioner isn't solving
- frizz that returns the moment you step outside
- breakage and snapping through the lengths
- brassiness creeping into blonde or lightened hair
- an itchy, flaky or oily scalp
- fine hair that goes flat by lunchtime
- curls that have lost their definition
Naming it does more for your budget than any discount, because it stops you buying the repair range when your hair isn't damaged, or the volumising range when your real issue is that your conditioner is too heavy.
Your haircare should solve something. Revolutionary concept, we know.
Get Shampoo and Conditioner Right Before Anything Else
Shampoo and conditioner are the two products you'll use most, so this is where your money does the most work. If the budget only stretches to one good decision, make it this one. We went through what separates the two shelves in Supermarket vs Salon Brands, and the short version is that the cheaper bottle usually costs you more per wash than the shelf price suggests.
The good news is that salon-grade doesn't start at the top of the price list. Daily Naturals, Jeval and RPR all sit at the affordable end and still do the thing supermarket haircare doesn't. They pick a job and commit to it. You buy the one that matches your problem and leave the rest on the shelf.
Spend a little more and you get a little more precision. Davroe and NAK Hair both run deeper ranges, so scalp care, strengthening and curl-specific cleansing become real options. This is the tier where hair with a particular personality starts getting properly looked after.

Premium is where formulas get most concentrated. Redken, Pureology, Matrix and the Olaplex Bond Maintenance range are built for specific, stubborn problems, and the maths flips: you pay more per bottle and use less per wash.
You don't need to stay inside one tier, either. A premium shampoo paired with an entry-level conditioner is a perfectly sensible combination, and nobody's going to check.

One Treatment Is Usually Enough
Treatments are where budgets quietly disappear.
A mask, a bond builder, a scalp serum, a protein treatment and three leave-ins. All sitting on the shelf, all used twice. Sound familiar?
Pick one. Use it weekly. See what changes.
If your hair is dry and undamaged, a hydrating mask or a leave-in usually covers it, and the Davroe Luxe Leave-In Masque and Ends Repair Leave-In Treatment are both small, inexpensive ways to find out if that's your answer. The Eleven Miracle Hair Treatment is another easy starting point and works as a leave-in across most hair types.
If your hair is genuinely damaged, which usually means bleached, coloured, chemically processed or heat-styled hard, then a bond-building treatment earns its place. Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector is the best known for a reason, and the Matrix Instacure Build A Bond Leave-in Balm is a lighter, lower-commitment option if you'd rather skip the pre-shampoo step.
And if your hair is healthy, strong and behaving itself, you may not need a treatment at all. That's not us being coy. Hair in good condition does without an intensive repair routine perfectly well, and buying one anyway is the fastest way to make a budget routine stop being a budget routine.
Have a look at hair treatments and leave-in treatments once you know which camp you're in.
Heat Protection Is the Cheapest Damage Control Available
If you use a straightener, a curler or a hairdryer with any regularity, heat protection isn't optional, and it's almost certainly the best value product in your routine.
The logic is simple. Repairing damage costs more than preventing it, takes longer, and never quite gets you back to where you started. A heat protectant is the one product that stops you needing the expensive products later.
The Davroe Thermaprotect spray is a straightforward, well-priced place to start and is designed to guard against styling heat up to 220°C. At the premium end, Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil doubles as a finishing oil and a heat protectant, and the Moroccanoil Original Treatment offers thermal protection while it smooths and hydrates.

Whichever you use, use it every time and on every section, including the pieces at the back you can't see in the mirror.
Turning the temperature down costs nothing at all, either, because 230°C is not a personality trait.
Shop the full heat protectant range if you don't currently have one.
Keep Styling to What You Actually Use
Styling products are the easiest place to overspend and the easiest place to cut back, because most people genuinely use one or two and own nine.
Be honest about your mornings. If you blow-dry and go, you need a smoothing cream or an oil and nothing else. If you wear your hair up most days, a decent hairspray matters more than a texture paste. If you have curls, a curl cream and a diffuser will outperform any amount of finishing product.
For smoothing and shine without spending a fortune, RPR Fix My Frizz Shine Serum and My Argan Plus Oil are good places to start.
Need a bit more control? Fudge Sculpt Shaper, NAK Styling Polish and the Schwarzkopf OSiS+ range cover everything from texture to stronger hold.
And if you're working with curls, Davroe CURLiCUE gives you products made specifically for them. No need to make a straight-hair styling routine do a job it wasn't designed for.
Buy the one you'll reach for on a Tuesday, not the one you might use for a wedding in March.
The full styling range is worth a browse once the rest of your routine is settled.
So, How Much Do You Actually Need to Spend?
Less than you probably think.
Start with shampoo and conditioner that suit your hair. Add heat protection if you use hot tools, a treatment if your hair needs one, and styling products you'll actually reach for.
That's your routine. No matching six-piece collection required.
Here's where we'd put the money, depending on what your hair is doing:
- Dry, dull or thirsty? A hydrating shampoo and conditioner pairing from Daily Naturals, Jeval or Davroe.
- Bleached, coloured or snapping? Olaplex No.3, with a gentler shampoo and conditioner underneath it.
- Frizz and roughness? RPR Fix My Frizz, or the Moroccanoil Original Treatment if you want the premium version.
- Heat-styling most days? Davroe Thermaprotect, before you spend anything on repair.
- Fine hair going flat? A volumising range from Daily Naturals or RPR, and a lighter conditioner.
- Genuinely not sure? Take the Hair Quiz or send us a message.
A good routine is the one you can actually repeat.
How to Make a Budget Routine Go Further
A few habits stretch the same products noticeably further.
Try the Small Size Before the Big One
A full-size bottle of something that doesn't suit your hair is an expensive experiment. Our Little Grails collection lets you try salon products without committing to the whole bottle.
Buy the Matched Set
Already found a shampoo and conditioner you love? Check the bundles before buying them separately. You might save a few dollars without changing a thing about your routine.

Use Less Than You Think You Need
Salon formulas are concentrated, so the amount you used before is probably too much. Start with half and add more only if you need it. This is the cheapest change on the list.
Wash Less Often Where You Can
Every wash uses product and strips a little natural oil. Going from four washes a week to three adds up over a year, and a dry shampoo covers the in-between days.
Size Up Once You're Sure
Found a shampoo and conditioner that genuinely suit you? The bigger bottle is better value per wash. Just hold off on doing that with the first one you try.
Build It in Order
Shampoo and conditioner first. Heat protection next if you use hot tools. Treatment third. Styling last. Spread that over a few months and your hair improves at every step.
